The Met Office has forecast high temperatures this week (Wednesday 24 June to Friday 26 June) and we want to help all Hightown customers stay safe and well during the heatwave.
Hot weather can affect your health, particularly if you are older, have underlying health conditions or live alone. Please take a few simple precautions to protect yourself and others.
How to keep cool at home
- Close curtains or blinds during the day to block out the sun and keep rooms cooler
- Open windows in the evening when temperatures drop
- Spend time in the coolest room in your home
- Avoid using appliances that generate heat where possible
Stay hydrated
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day (water is best)
- Avoid too much alcohol, which can dehydrate you
Protect yourself outdoors
- Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to protect against the sun
- Try to plan activities for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening
- Seek shade whenever possible
Keep your body cool
- Cool your skin with water, such as a damp cloth, spray or cool shower
- Slow down and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours
- Move somewhere cooler indoors or outside, whichever feels more comfortable
Stay safe
- Never stay in a closed space like a stationary car in hot weather
- Take care if swimming and follow local safety advice
Look out for others
- Check in on neighbours, friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable
- Make sure they are keeping cool and staying hydrated
Know the signs of heat-related illness
- Be aware of symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea or unusual tiredness.
- If you feel unwell, seek advice by calling NHS 111
- In an emergency, call 999 immediately
Plan ahead
Taking simple steps now can help you stay comfortable throughout the heatwave:
- Check the weather forecast regularly
- Plan your day to avoid the hottest periods
- Make sure you have everything you need at home
