This week is Learning Disability Week and we’re spotlighting one of our wonderful people we support, Keith, sharing his involvement in the tender process for Bridgewell – a supported living service in Bracknell.
Keith played a central role in Hightown’s successful bid for the Bridgewell scheme, bringing the organisation’s approach to life through his own lived experience.
During the second stage of the tender, Keith featured in a video as part of Hightown’s presentation, speaking openly about the support he receives and what it means to him. His voice added an authenticity and impact that no written proposal could achieve.
But Keith’s involvement didn’t stop there. He also attended the council offices and took part in the presentation itself, helping demonstrate Hightown’s person-centred approach in a real and meaningful way.
Bracknell Forest Council had identified Keith as a potential future resident of Bridgewell, regardless of which provider was successful. He was excited by the possibility and quickly developed a strong connection to the new development. Almost daily, he travelled by bus to watch the building take shape, documenting its progress through photos and sharing updates with staff at his previous home.
When Hightown was awarded the contract, Keith had every reason to celebrate. Having played an important part in the bid, he was overjoyed to learn that he would also be moving into Bridgewell, supported by the same team he already knew and trusted.
As construction progressed, Keith remained closely involved. He was kept updated with photos of the site and, once it was safe, was able to visit in person. Wearing full PPE, he explored the building and saw his new bedroom for the first time - a moment that left a lasting impression.
Alongside an ensuite, Keith discovered something he hadn’t expected: his own kitchenette. Visibly emotional, he responded simply, “My own kitchen!”, showing just how much this level of independence meant to him.
Keith continued to visit as the build neared completion, gradually becoming familiar with his new home. In the final stages, he and his future housemates spent time together in their shared spaces, enjoying takeaway coffee and lunch and beginning to settle into what would soon become everyday life. Keith also began preparing for his move, purchasing items for his kitchenette and bringing them to store in his new home.
Moving day was a milestone filled with excitement and emotion. As he left his previous home for the final time, Keith marked the occasion in his own way, singing:
“Bye Bye Cambridge Road, Hello Bridgewell!”
Arriving at Bridgewell was met with cheers. Despite a busy day of unpacking, Keith remained fully involved, embracing every moment of the transition.
Keith has now been living at Bridgewell for almost eight months. His journey, from contributing to our tender to moving into his new home, reflects what Hightown is all about: involving the people we support, valuing their voices and helping them live more independent, fulfilling lives.
Keith commented: “I really enjoy living at Bridgewell. I like having my own kitchen and being able to make cups of tea and have snacks in my room, it’s made me feel more independent. I also liked being part of the tender and working with staff. It was exciting seeing my home being built and then seeing how it turned out. Getting to look around before it was finished was amazing, it’s something I’ll always remember.
"I am working on a project with Francis (Zvoma) and Francine (Flat 3) to grow our own vegetables. We are growing corn on the cob, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, strawberries and brussel sprouts. I water the plants every evening. I have bought some flower seeds to start on the flower beds next!”
For Keith, Bridgewell isn’t just a building — it’s home.
