Balcony safety: enjoy summer responsibly

Balconies

With the warmer weather on the way, many of us enjoy spending time on our balconies. It’s a great way to relax and take in the fresh air – but it’s important to use these spaces safely.

Items not allowed on balconies

To reduce fire risk and keep everyone safe, please do not place the following items on your balcony:

  • Barbecues or anything flammable
  • Large furniture, wooden or paper items
  • Electrical appliances (like fridges, tumble dryers)
  • Cooking oil, gas canisters, patio heaters
  • Exercise equipment, bikes, e-bikes, or anything with lithium batteries
  • Children’s play equipment, or trampolines
  • Sheds, cupboards or other permanent structures
  • Rubbish bags or decorating materials

Items that are safe to use on your balcony

  • Small potted plants or window boxes
  • A small table and chairs
  • A low clothes airer (below the handrail height)

Important balcony safety reminders

  • Never use barbecues or light fires
  • Do not throw anything off the balcony
  • Do not hang items over railings or use flammable screens
  • Keep children supervised at all times
  • Store bikes in designated bike storage areas, not on balconies
  • Keep balconies tidy and free from clutter
  • Avoid blocking communal areas by storing personal items indoors

By following these simple rules, we can all enjoy our balconies safely and help protect our homes and neighbours.
