A resident's journey beyond domestic abuse

DV

After surviving a decade of domestic violence, Rachel’s* story is a testament to resilience, courage and the power of persistence. Her journey through refuge, temporary housing and finally into a place she can call home is both heart-breaking and inspiring.

“I survived a 10-year domestic violence situation,” Rachel begins. “I went into a refuge, then spent four years at the YMCA before finally getting my own place.”

Her journey started in Northampton, where she was placed in a domestic violence refuge. “You don’t get to choose where you go, you’re sent to a different county for your safety,” says Rachel. But then the pandemic hit and she found herself stuck there for three years.

When she tried to return to her hometown, she was told by the local council that she no longer had a local connection. “I needed to get closer to home and a YMCA in Hertfordshire was the only place I could get into,” Rachel added.

She spent four years there, never giving up on her housing application. “I kept persisting,” she says.

Rachel commented: “I experienced a lot of abuse during those 10 years but it has made me stronger.”

Today, Rachel lives in her own home and is a Hightown resident. It’s more than just bricks and mortar, it’s a symbol of freedom, safety and new beginnings.

Rachel says: “I’ve never had my own place before. Now, I feel like a completely different person. For years, I felt like something was missing - no security, no stability. And as you get older, that uncertainty starts to weigh on you. But today, I feel something I haven’t felt in a long time - excitement.”
