  • Local Amenities

Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA was a German-born Victorian artist who settled in the small town of Bushey and in 1883 opened a pioneering art school that attracted students from around the world. He built himself a Bavarian-style mansion, calling it Lululaund, after his second wife, Lulu Griffiths, and installed an early film studio there where he directed seven historical costume dramas.  Herkomer’s legacy to Bushey is the tranquil Bushey Rose Garden which has recently been restored.

Bushey Museum tells the story of the town and the many enterprises that were based there, as well as displaying pictures by Bushey artists including Hubert Herkomer and Lucy Kemp-Welch.

Bushey has plenty of surrounding countryside to enjoy. Golfers are catered for at the Bushey Country Club and the exclusive Hartsbourne Country Club. There is a public swimming pool at Bushey Grove Leisure Centre in Aldenham Road.

Local amenities include local shops and restaurants. The nearest main shopping area is Watford, just 3.9 miles from Rossway Quarter. There is also a good selection of primary and secondary schools serving the area.

The nearby Watford Palace Theatre puts on a programme of plays and films. Vue Watford is an 11-screen multiplex cinema in Woodside Leisure Park on the edge of Watford.

The art students and their studios have disappeared from Bushey but the town still prides itself on its arts scene. There is an arts festival every year in July.

Bushey is located just 16 miles north-west of central London on the southeastern edge of Watford, within the boundaries of the M25 and close to the M1.

With Bushey station only 2.2 miles away from Rossway Quarter, however, Bushey manages to retain the feel of a rural village whilst benefiting from excellent transport links into the city.
